Speech disorders occur when an individual has difficulty producing sounds correctly or fluently. Individuals with speech disorders may also present difficulty with voice and/or resonance. A speech-language pathologist can help improve the following areas of need:

Language Disorders

Language disorders occur when an individual has difficulty understanding others or being able to express themselves appropriately. This may include difficulty sharing thoughts, ideas, feelings, or using language in a functional and socially appropriate manner. A speech therapist can help improve the following skills:

  • Written Language

Social Communication Disorders

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder present social communication disorders. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) may also lead to social communication deficits. Someone with social communication issues may present difficulty with one or more of the following areas:

Cognitive Disorders

Individuals who have had a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or dementia may present difficulty with executive functioning, reasoning, thought organization, paying attention, and/or problem-solving. Cognitive issues may arise in individuals who suffer from any of the following conditions:

Swallowing Disorders

A swallowing disorder, also known as dysphagia refers to difficulty eating or swallowing food/liquids. Dysphagia may occur in individuals who have suffered from the following:

  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Dementia
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Developmental Disabilities
  • Head and Neck Problems
